This is the main page of the “Telephone Directory UK” mobile app wiki. This wiki is the central point where creators of the app exchange ideas, knowledge and resources.


The app
     Two equally important main components of the application are necessary: 
                                  
The code
     The plan is to use the strengths of the IBM’s MobileFirst platform.  Initially development will be focused on Android,  with the idea to keep code as platform independent as possible. That’s where development in MobileFirst Studio should shine and help a lot.


It is still undecided if native or hybrid mode application to be developed. Done properly, hybrid mode app should allow to share most of the code between the platforms, simplifying code base and reducing development time. However hybrid app will require data connection to the server all the time when app is in use. Unless some efficient caching schema can be designed to facilitate, at least partially, usable offline mode, the native app seems to be the way to go.


The data
      For a phone directory app, the code is just a way to conveniently present the data to the user. The usefulness of data will determine the success of the app. The dataset for the app should cover initially  contact details for business to consumer segment, i.e. contain telephone numbers of various businesses selling to general public. Those for example will include customer services, pre and post sales support and advice lines, etc. Inclusion of other contact details like official social network profiles, e-mail, website, chat and postal address for businesses should be looked at as lower priority miscellaneous task and done where possible without much additional effort.  The reason is that one of the main goals is to have the application usable offline, without any form of data connection. Thus link to facebook page or email address are useless as oppose to phone number when app is in the offline mode.

First attempt to gather and systemize the initial dataset will be done in this wiki, manually gathering abovementioned information for a subset of business directory.


Micro FAQ could be added to some specific directory entries at later stage. Examples of such terse FAQ suitable for mobile app are mobile operator internet access point settings or default login/password for broadband provider’s router.
